Project: PPS Parent and Family Landing Page

Additional Project based on initial research conducted from the project PPS Homepage Redesign.

Platform/Application Used: Blackboard Web Content Manager

Project Role: Project Manager and Web Designer

Scope: Develop a friendly and informative landing page for parents.

Analytics prove this page was one of our top visited page, however bounce rate was extremely high. We believed it was due to the following:

  • No defining features that this page is targeted to parents.

  • One function only: Student Information (Update Student Information, Apply to a Magnet Program, Check Student’s Grade). The level of knowledge assumes only well-versed parents are coming to this page to access the Student Information Application.

  • The top banner and branding from our homepage disappear. The “Parents” quick link from the homepage jumps to an unlabeled and visually different page structure.

Prior Landing Page

No defining features to welcome the specific audience: Parents and Families

Research Conducted:

  • Visit top 10 district websites (previously collected in PPS Homepage Redesign) to develop common shortcut menus for parents.

  • Informal feedback from parents on what they have a hard time finding, what they’re most interested in viewing on the page.

  • Analytics gathered of our top searched and visited pages to develop a list of commonly viewed pages for parents.

New Landing

Now within same PPS menu structure and a clear and welcoming header. Quick and Clear Guardian Access to eSchoolPLUS, a common feedback from parents.

The top 3 resources deemed by research and feedback, as well as a new, highlighted location for new parents who may be browsing the page to click and enroll their children. Enrollment page is also needed for current parents that are looking to apply for magnet programs within the district.

The parent support information highlighted towards the bottom was something many parents did not know existed or did not know how to find when we met with user groups. This was added in a later release.

At the bottom are Quick Links specifically targeted for parents. The menu structure is robust and overwhelming. We simply can’t help the fact we have thousands of pages within our district website, but we can help parents with a custom menu for them that highlights what we have researched and heard feedback were the pages they wanted.

The quick links are in constant flux, we are constantly looking to improve shortcuts.
